Downloading, Installing And Registering - A Beginner’s Guide
All Declan Software language learning software is downloadable from our website. The downloadable software are the full versions but have some features or content locked until the software is purchased. This allows you to “try before you buy”.
After the software is purchased online (using a credit card or PayPal) your User Name and Registration Code is emailed to you. The name and registration code are used to unlock the full features of the software. In this post I will take you through the process of downloading, installing and registering a Declan Software product. I will use the Declan Software Japanese Dictionary as an example.
Step 1: Downloading the software
All Declan Software products can be downloaded from our website using the appropriate “Download Now” button:

To download a copy of the software you simply click on the “Download Now” button. This should bring up the Windows download options dialogue – like this:

Click the “Save” button and the Save As dialogue box will appear, asking you where you would like to save the file. The most convinent place is on your Desktop. To locate your Desktop click the “Save in” navigation drop down as shown here:

and you will see an entry called “Desktop” as shown below. Just select this with your mouse….

then click the “Save” button….

and the downloading will begin. A progress bar will be displayed as the download progresses.

Once the download process is complete you should find a copy of the installation EXE file where you elected to save it. In our case on the Windows desktop as shown here:

Now we are ready to actually install the software on your computer.
Step 2: Installing the Software
The next step in the process is executing the installation file to install a useable copy of the software on your PC. This is done by left-clicking twice quickly (double clicking) on the installation EXE that you saved on your desktop. That will start the installation process.
You should see an “Open File - Security Warning” which should verify that the file has been digitally signed and veified by Declan Software (see the area highlighted in blue in the image below). Click the “Run” button to continue.

That should start the installation process. The Setup dialogue box should then appear like this:

To proceed, click the “Next” button – here circled in red.
Next comes the License Agreement. To proceed you will to click the “I accept this agreement” option and then click the “Next” button again.

Then you select the location on your computer where you would like the software to be installed. The default location (in the c:\program files\ folder) is where most software on your computer is installed so that should suit you. Click the “Next” button to continue.

Next you can specify where on your Start Menu you would like the put links to the software and the help files. Again there is no need to change the default position. Click the “Next” button to continue.

Finally there is a installation summary page. If you are happy to go ahead with the installation, click the “Next” button.
You should now see the installation progressing.

Once the installation is complete you will see the “Finish” button. Click this to finalize the installation and exit the installation process.

That is it. The software is now installed. You should now see a shortcut to the software installed on your desktop. Here is what the Japanese Dictionary looks like on a desktop:

The installation process also installs a new menu group in the Windows Start Menu. This includes shortcuts to help files and registration links.
To see this, click the Start button, then the “All Programs” item – you should then see a new menu item for the software you just installed. Here is what that looks like in the case of Declan’s Japanese Dictionary.

That is it – the software is now ready to be used.
Note: If you see a message like this

when you try to run the software the first time, you will have to log into Windows as Admistrator to run the software the first time. After that you will be able to run the software as a normal user.
Step 3: Registration
After you install the software, you may decided to go ahead and purchase it (either individually or as part of a discount bundle).
Purchasing the software can be done by following the “Order Now” buttons underneath the “Download Now” buttons on our website. Or but following the order links in the software and its help files.
Once you have successfully purchased the software you will be emailed your User Name and a Registration Code. These will look something like this:
Name: John Doe
Code: ABCD-1234-ABCD-1234-ABCD-1234
To unlock the full features and content to the software, these details will need to be entered into the software. To do this, first start the software (by double clicking the shortcut icon on the desktop). On the main window of the software you will see either a “Register” button – like this:

or a “Buy Now!” menu item — like this:

Click this to bring up the Registration Dialogue. For a selection of software titles (ReadWrite Hiragana for example) you will have to additionally select the “Register” tab as illustrated here:

On the registration dialogue you will see the two text boxes where your User Name and Registration Code should be copied and pasted in your registration email. It is easiest to use the keyboard shortcuts Ctl-C to copy and Ctl-V to paste.

Once your User Name and Registration Code have been correctly entered that “Register” button below the text boxes should become active as shown here:

and after the “Register” button is clicked you should see a message to the effect that the software is now registered to you.

Congratulations! You have successfully downloaded, installed and registered your Declan Software language learning title.
